Kennedy Library Bus Stop Improvements

The San Luis Obispo Transit bus stop at the Cal Poly Kennedy Library has the highest level of foot traffic and is the most frequently used stop on campus. This project intends to simulate the bus stop in order to increase the bus capacity of passengers while also improving the number of serviced passengers.

Problem 

Definition

The Kennedy Library bus stop, which includes Lines 3A, 3B, 4A, and 4B, is the busiest stop on Cal Poly's campus. The objective is to determine the optimal number of buses per a line in order to service the most passengers during rush hour.

  • Improve passenger safety at sidewalk where students queue for the bus

  •  Decrease wait times and queue size during rush hour

  • recommend areas for improvement

  • Cal Poly Kennedy Library stop is the only stop analyzed.

  • Ultimate result is to increase capacity and increase the number of passengers served.

Model Validity

After validation that the following metrics are within 10% of the actual value that is recorded the model is assumed to be valid: passengers queued, bus capacity, bus arrival rate.
